What happens during an acupuncture session?
I begin by taking a detailed case history. This will include any current concerns you have about your health and wellbeing, and all aspects of your health systems including, but not only, your digestive system, breathing system, sleep, skin, 5 senses, any issues with headaches, muscles and bones. I also ask about your life journey and, for women, their reproductive system.
I then take you pulses (in Chinese medicine we can read 12 different pulses on your wrists – 6 on each side). This gives me further information about your physical and emotional self. I also look at your tongue. This gives a longer-term history of your physical health and wellbeing.
With this information I then choose a ‘points prescription’ which is a selection of points which will free up and move qi (energy) in your body to help heal emotional, mental, physical and spiritual aspects that have been out of alignment.
I then insert tiny needles into the skin (the needles are hair width) into the specific acupuncture points we have chosen for you. You may experience a buzzing or ‘Qi’ sensation at this point. It is common to feel a deep feeling of relaxation while the needles are in.
I then continue to check your pulses to read when a change has occurred and when it is time to take the needles out.
Follow up treatments may be needed. I will advise some aftercare treatment following your acupuncture session.
